To the Editor:
On Nov. 8 Orange residents will decide who will lead our town for the next two years.
As our first selectman, Jim Zeoli has cut town government spending, brought in development like UI, Aurora Products as well as many new shops and restaurants. Jim’s effort for us has recently resulted in our town receiving a credit upgrade to AA+.This subject has been much of a debate as of date. The reality of this is not whether or not it was started by another selectman, but that it was achieved under Jim’s administration. Jim’s continued persistence, ability and knowledge have been the driving force that allows for developed working relationships between town government and those businesses towns like to attract.
In reviewing the Town News on Oct. 14, I read Jim’s opponent’s campaign ads. I question why a candidate seeking to unseat an incumbent who, even by the admission of Joe Blake, has done an excellent job for us, would put out ads that really say nothing and are abounding with nonsense.
For example, Jim’s opponent says that he will “fight for no tax increase.” Wow! The former Board of Finance chair and current OBOE business administrator should know better. The shift in Orange’s student population at Amity alone will guaranty future tax increases to Orange taxpayers, not to mention the rising cost of healthcare, and contractual obligations.
And how can a candidate promise not to raise taxes and provide bulk trash pick-up for seniors, spend money on technology and make real measurable upgrades (whatever that means) to Orange’s educational facilities.
This time of year, I expect to read and hear campaign promises and declarations, and even some exaggerations in what a candidate is going to do for me.
But I would expect a self-proclaimed successful businessman to at least make an organized and consistent argument for why I should vote for him and not vote for the person who has done a proven and successful job and has the best interest of the town at heart.
I remain unconvinced that Kevin McNabola is the right choice to be Orange’s first selectman. During these hard financial times, Orange needs a person who has brought businesses to Orange; who has cut government spending; and who has looked out for all of us. Orange needs to stick with Jim Zeoli.
