Zeoli says comments taken out of context

To the Editor:

It was recently brought to my attention that my opponent’s wife submitted a letter stating that she was hurt and offended by comments that I made during the Or Shalom debate.

I feel a response is required for those that may not understand what Mrs. McNabola is talking about. As Mrs. McNabola was not present at the debate, I believe that she has taken my comments out of context.

The question from the moderator was, “What is one thing you like about your opponent?” My answer was a brief time line of when I first met Kevin in 1999, when he joined my party and worked hard to advance himself personally and professionally.

This included his first home which was a very nice, small home on a lot which has a large elevation variation from front to back. I also stated how I was very proud to help him locate the home he and his family currently live in. For those who were not present, I gave my answer in a humorous and caring tone.

Moreover, Kevin did not complain about my comments at the debate. While I am sorry for Mrs. McNabola’s misunderstanding, when kept in context, my description underscored how far I felt Kevin had come from where he started.

Mrs. McNabola’s is also mistaken when she spoke of Governor Rell. For those who do not recall, in 2007, Governor Rell was pleased and honored to swear me in as First Selectman. Additionally, she appointed me as a commission member to the Farmland Preservation Advisory Board.

Anyone who knows me may be offended by this apparent political ploy to sway voters. To those I say, this election should not be determined by a few words. Notwithstanding my disappointment in my opponent’s decision to run against me, I remain proud of his successes and that I helped him along the way.

As first selectman, I have always put Orange first, my team and I have done great work for Orange and we have the plan to keep Orange moving forward.
