Union Church's stained glass

Stained glass windows created by Henri Matisse and Marc Chagall may be seen in the Union Church of Pocantico Hills, Sleepy Hollow, N.Y. The rose window was Matisse’s final work; he had completed the design and selected the colors just two days before his death. His daughter oversaw its creation and installation. It was commissioned in memory of Abby Aldrich Rockefeller (1876-1948). Marc Chagall was commissioned in 1963 to design a memorial to John D. Rockefeller Jr. (Abby’s widower, who died in 1960). The “Good Samaritan” was installed in 1965. Chagall went on to create eight side windows, one in memory of Michael Rockefeller, who was lost in New Guinea. These are the only cycle of church windows created by Chagall in the United States.

The church is open April-October, weekdays except Tuesdays, 11 to 5; Saturdays, 10 to 5; Sundays, 2 to 5 (November-December, weekdays except Tuesdays, 11 to 4, Saturday, 10 to 4, Sunday, 2 to 4). Church activities may pre-empt visiting hours (call 914-631-8200 weekdays or 914-332-6659 weekends to confirm). Admission is $5; guided or self-guided tours are available.
