Philip Johnson’s Glass House

Philip Johnson’s Glass House in New Canaan, designed as his private residence, opened last summer as a National Trust Historic Site and one of the most celebrated examples of modernist architecture in the world. The 47-acre site features 14 structures, a major collection of contemporary art and a meticulously sculptured landscape. The property, donated by Mr. Johnson to the National Trust, receives visitors thanks to a bequest by David Whitney, an art collector, curator, art advisor and Mr. Johnson’s longtime partner, who died in 2006.

The immensely popular guided tours of the Glass House are often booked months ahead; this year, tours are available through Nov. 30. Groups begin their tours at the Glass House Visitor Center in downtown New Canaan.  Tickets are $30 for a 90-minute tour and $45 for a two-hour tour. Three new two-hour tours this season focus on architecture, art and landscape in the context of the Glass House. Other options include a Twilight Tour and a Glass House + Four Seasons (Mr. Johnson designed the restaurant) package; reservations are available online or by phone at 866-811-4111. The Glass House Web site offers detailed tour information and views of the site.
