Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture in Mt. Pleasant, N.Y., was founded to demonstrate, teach and promote sustainable, community-based food production. It’s open to visitors from 10 to 5, Wednesdays through Sundays (parking fee: $5 May to November). Fields and a greenhouse provide the crops to feed the farm’s animals and supply produce for the Blue Hill Restaurant and Café on the grounds. (Reservations are necessary for Blue Hill at Stone Barns; call 914-366-9600.) The Blue Hill Café has take-out food to enjoy on the spot as well as seasonal preserves. Animals include Cotswold and Finn-Dorset sheep, as well as cows, pigs, goats, rabbits and chickens. Visitors are asked to give space to the farmers and the livestock.
Workshops and tours are offered regularly and there's a summer farmer's market on weekends, Fridays through Sundays, 1-4. The center offers summer day camp as well as internships, which fill quickly.
