Rowayton Arts Center

The Rowayton Arts Center sits on the east bank of the Five Mile River in Rowayton in the former home of the Reliance Hook and Ladder Company, later the Rowayton Library. With more than 600 members, the arts center “exists to exhibit and sell the works of these creative people, conduct classes at all levels, and serve as a cultural center for the community.” Classes are offered for adults and children; visiting nationally known artists lead workshops and do demonstrations. The 1905 building was renovated in 2003 and has a studio for classes, workshops and demonstrations on the top floor and three galleries on the ground floor: the Main Gallery, where a new show opens with a reception each month; the Little Gallery, where visitors may buy small artworks, crafts and cards; and the Portside Gallery,  available for special shows.

Exhibits include a variety of themed members’ shows; opening June 5 is the Walter Brooks Memorial Watercolor Show (through June 26. Following are: Marine and Coastal Exhibition, July 3-31; Alternative Visions: Abstract and Abstractions, Aug. 7-28; Just Paint: Oil and Acrylic Show, Sept. 4-25; the 17th Mavis Fenner Memorial Juried Exhibition, Oct. 2-30. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 12 to 5, and Sunday, 1 to 4.
