Railroad history buffs don’t have far to go to indulge their interest; they can even get there by train. Or drive up to Danbury, to the restored 1903 railway station on White Street right next to the current MetroNorth Danbury station. The train yards have been transformed by the many volunteers of the Danbury Railway Museum, who now spend their hours restoring rolling stock and keeping the yard and its turntable in perfect running order. Admission is $6 per person, $5 seniors and $4 per child (3-12). The museum is open Wednesday-Saturday 10-4, and Sundays 12-4, before Memorial Day and after Labor Day; summer hours are Monday-Saturday, 10 to 5, Sunday, 12 to 5.
The museum has a special room for birthday parties. There are Railyard Local Rides on weekends from April through November and during special events, taking visitors through the restored railyard. There is an additional fee for the rides. Special events include Owney the Railway Post Office Dog Day during June, Danbury Railway Day in August, Pumpkin Patch Trains in October and Santa Trains in December along with special holiday displays in the museum.
The Danbury Railway Museum is at the restored train station on White Street. Take I-84 to Exit 5, to Main Street, south to White Street. For more information, call 203-778-8337. The Web site is www.danbury.org/drm.
