The New Canaan Historical Society, founded in 1889, brings together the history and genealogies of New Canaan families, as well as the relics and curiosities that distinguish the town. Its museum complex at 13 Oenoke Ridge includes the Hanford-Silliman House built in 1764 by Stephen Hanford, a weaver and early tavernkeeper. The New Canaan Historical Society acquired it in 1957. Also on the property are The John Rogers Studio & Museum; the one-room Rock School, built in 1799; the Tool Museum; the New Canaan Hand Press, recreating a 19th Century printing office.
