Grab the bikes and the helmets and go off-road with young bicyclists. (Helmets for youngsters 12 and younger is the law in Connecticut, 14 and younger in New York state.) For those who find touring on pavement unexciting (or too exciting), mountain biking might fill the bill. Huntington State Park, off Sunset Hill Road in Redding, has 25 miles of trails (860-566-2304) and after some extensive work there, the park’s roads are open again. Cranbury Park in Norwalk has eight tough single and open trails off Grumman Avenue (203-854-7806). Woodbury Ski & Racquet, Route 47, Woodbury, offers about 20 miles of terrain with 36 trails (203-263-2203). Ridgefield’s Hemlock Hills open space has trails reached from Bennett’s Farm Road at the Little League fields, or Ned’s Mountain and Pine Mountain roads and biking is also allowed at the Bennett’s Pond State Park, off Bennett’s Farm Road. Blue Mountain Reservation, a Westchester County Park on Welcher Avenue off Route 9 in Peekskill, has seven miles of trails, all designated for skill level (914-862-5275). There’s an $8 parking fee.
Wherever you choose to do your mountain biking, check to make sure that the activity is still permitted and observe trail rules and safety regulations that may be posted.
