Connecticut Audubon Coastal Center

The Connecticut Audubon Society maintains a nature study center on the shores of Long Island Sound at Milford. Located on 8.4 acres of barrier beach and salt marsh in the Smith-Hubble Wildlife Refuge (open daily, dawn to dusk) and next to the 840-acre Charles Wheeler Wildlife Management area at the mouth of the Housatonic River, the center features a beach walk trail, beach front (no swimming), two observation platforms, a 70-foot observation tower and an exhibit room. The center offers a unique confluence of salt water, tidal marsh and fresh water, which support great variety of plants and animals. Bird-watching is exceptional: 315 species have been recorded at the point and each spring the center offers Web cam coverage of an osprey nest. There are year-round programs for adults and children.

The center is open Tuesdays-Saturdays from 10 to 4, Sundays from noon to 4; admission is by donation. It includes a tidepool touch-tank, a salt marsh exhibit, live animals and program space. There is no charge for entry to the grounds or for parking.
