Mark Twain House

Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) was a major presence in Redding, where he lived before his death 101 years ago on April 21, 1910, at Stormfield. In Hartford, where he’d lived from 1874 to 1891, it’s possible to see how the Clemenses lived and entertained during a period when the family was financially secure and able to afford the latest in furnishings and labor-saving equipment for their staff.

The museum is open daily (except Tuesdays January-March), from 9:30 to 5:30, Monday to Saturday, and 12 to 5:30 on Sunday. Admission, which is by guided tour only, is $16 for adults, $14 for seniors and $10 for children 6 to 16.  A tour of the Mark Twain House takes about two hours. An additional tour of the Kitchen and Servants Wing is $4 for those who purchase it with the main tour. (Because of tighter spaces, the kitchen tours are limited to 10 people.) The speciall exhibit this year is American Storytellers: Norman Rockwell & Mark Twain, which includes works from the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Mass., and other collections, as well as comparisons of the two men's storytelling skills. It runs through Sept. 6.
