For a gardener, the only thing more satisfying than working on his/her own garden is visiting other people’s gardens. And since gardeners tend to be generous people, the Garden Conservancy annually makes available a guide to gardens that will be open to visitors, on specific days, for the modest admission fee of $5. The program has expanded nationwide since its founding in 1995, and now features hundreds of gardens, many in the Northeast. The guide is free with Garden Conservancy membership, which starts at $50 for individuals. If you just want the Open Days Directory, the cost is $21.95; books of six garden admission tickets are available to non-members for $25 and to members for $15. The directory describes the more than 300 private gardens that will be open to visitors and also lists public gardens by state. The conservancy works to preserve the best gardens in America with the money raised by Open Days directories and through membership fees. Projects have included gardens in New Orleans damaged by Hurricane Katrina and restoring the gardens at Alcatraz.
