At the Discovery Museum, youngsters are encouraged to reach out and touch many of the exhibits. This is not just a place to go to see things. Instead, the Bridgeport museum on Park Avenue is totally interactive, involving see-hear-touch exploration of the arts and sciences in all sorts of exhibits from space to sports to physics. Many of the special exhibits are also hands-on: From Here to There, which opened June 1, 2011, explores travel on land, sea, and in the air. There are also fine art exhibits in one of the galleries. The Challenger Learning Center has special programs to explore space travel and the Henry duPont III Planetarium offers several shows daily. The museum hosts programs for schools, scouts and other groups.
Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 to 5, and Sunday, noon to 5; closed major holidays; open Mondays, 10 to 5, during July and August. Admission is $8.50 for adults and $7 for students and seniors, free for under 5 years. There are summer programs that emphasize science and mathematics — from robotics to “spa science” to space exploration — for kids 5-12.
The Discovery Museum is at 4450 Park Avenue in Bridgeport, close to the Park Avenue exit off the Merritt Pkwy., or I-95. For information call 203-372-3521 or visit the Web site, www.discoverymuseum.org.
