The Darien Arts Center provides the town with a wide range of arts experiences, from theater and dance to music and the visual arts. Founded in 1975, the center reaches all ages through its classes and performances in programs such as the Darien Players, Cabaret and Events; arts, dance and music departments (with classes on campus as well as off by Center instructors), Darien Kids Theatre and the Visual Arts Center (with classes for both adults and children). The arts center also organizes craft birthday parties, including one in which participants each make a character from animator's colorized molding clay. An estimated 800 students sof all ages participate each week at the non-profit center, which is funded by tuition, ticket sales and donations.
The Darien Players recently completed a production of the monumental drama, Inherit the Wind. The Cabaret at the arts center most recently presented A Tribute to the Gals Who Make Me Want to Sing featuring Sue Matsuki; check the Web site for upcoming events; many of the shows are standing-room-only. Summer camp sessions began June 14, with classes in art and dance for pre-schoolers and art, dance and theater for grades 1-4.
The Darien Arts Center is at 2 Renshaw Road, behind the Darien Town Hall. Office hours are 10 to 4, Monday through Friday; phone, 203-655-8683. The Web site is arts.darien.org. The box office number is 203-655-5414.
