The Center for Contemporary Printmaking in Norwalk’s Mathews Park is a haven for working artists, who may rent a studio or darkroom, or take a class. Set in a restored 19th Century stone carriage house, the non-profit multi-media workshop and gallery is devoted to the creation and exhibition of original prints, photographs, artists’ books, paper works and related disciplines. Visiting master printers are available to work with students using the center’s intaglio and lithographic presses, a Vandercook press, an acid room, silkscreen facilities, a paper-making mill, a darkroom and an exposure table. The center provides a cottage for artists in residence, which includes a studio, workshop, temporary residence and exhibition space.
Exhibits are regularly mounted in the center’s gallery, open Monday-Saturday, 9 to 5, and Sunday, 12 to 5; admission is free. Open on June 2 was the Eighth Biennial International Miniature Print Exhibition, a show that has been juried by Judith Brodsky, founder of the Brodsky Center for Innovative Editions at Rutgers University. The show runs through Aug. 19. Late fall will bring Monothon, a fund-raising printing marathon.
The Center for Contemporary Printmaking is at 299 West Avenue in Norwalk; turn into Mathews Park. Telephone 203-899-7999. Web site: www.contemprints.org.
