Collegiate Baseball

Another summer and the Danbury Westerners are back, to play baseball the way it’s done in the big leagues: with wooden bats. Aspiring players will make up the 12 teams of the New England Collegiate Baseball League, which starts its season in early June and plays an eight-week, 42-game per team schedule. Teams in addition to the Westerners include the Holyoke Blue Sox, Keene Swamp Bats, Laconia Muskrats, Mystic Schooners, Old Orchard Beach Raging Tide, New Bedford Bay Sox, Newport Gulls, North Adams SteepleCats, North Shore Navigators, Sanford Mainers and the Vermont Mountaineers. The League Championship is determined by a playoff in early August.

The Westerners’ home field is in Rogers Park, at the south end of Danbury’s Main Street; the league’s schedule is posted online at necbl.com, with most games played evenings at 7. The 2011 team includes players Virginia Tech, Johns Hopkins, University of Hartford, Tulane, Princeton, Florida International, Fairfield University, St. John's and several other schools.
