In New Canaan’s Waveny Park, the Carriage Barn Arts Center is a busy place from fall through spring, with exhibits and programs. The arts center is housed in a 19th Century stone barn, which was restored by volunteers in 1977; they formed the New Canaan Society for the Arts. The Carriage Barn hosts several premier art exhibitions annually, including the major juried show, SPECTRUM, which includes paintings, drawings, graphics and sculptures, which in 2011 took place May 1-June 11. Other shows during the year include the Members’ Show, a juried photography exhibition and several invitational exhibitions selected by the curator and exhibition committee. The emphasis is generally on contemporary work. The Carriage Barn Arts Center is also home to the Waveny Chamber Society concert series.
Gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday, 12-4; weekends, 1-5; admission is free. Memberships are offered in the New Canaan Society for the Arts, which provide invitations to gallery openings and special events, discounted entry fees for shows and discounted tuition on art classes. Members are also eligible to enter the Annual Members’ Exhibition.
The Carriage Barn Arts Center is in Waveny Park, off South Avenue, New Canaan. For more information, 203-972-1895 or or carriagebarn.org.
