The zoo in Bridgeport’s Beardsley Park is Connecticut’s only accredited zoo and its name reflects that, officially Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo. Set on 52 acres, the zoo has more than 300 animals representing more than 120 species of wildlife and participates in the Species Survival Plan. North and South American wildlife, including red wolves and the rare maned wolf, are featured. Among the endangered species is the Amur (Siberian) tiger. The New World Tropics building contains such exotic animals as ocelot and cayman, monkeys, and the brilliantly colorful toucan in a lush, naturalistic habitat. The Beardsley Zoo also features a New England Farmyard and an interactive prairie dog village.
Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for children (3-11) and for seniors. Children under 3 are admitted free. The zoo is open daily (except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day) 9 to 4, and the New World Tropics Building is open from 10:30 to 3:30. The Peacock Cafe and Carousel are closed Monday and Tuesday and close at 2:30 Wednesday to Friday; the gift shop closes at 3:30 weekdays. Hours for the Cafe and Carousel are adjusted in the warmer months.
The zoo is in Beardsley Park, off Noble Avenue in Bridgeport. Take Exit 49S for Route 25 South from the Merritt Parkway. For more information call 203-394-6565. Web site: www.beardsleyzoo.org.
