Visitors to the Darien Historical Society’s Bates-Scofield House Museum, a saltbox built in 1736, which features a massive central chimney, large fireplace and beehive oven, will find 18th and early 19th Century regional furniture and an 18th Century herb garden, created in 1968 and maintained by the Darien Garden Club, which also cares for the historical rose collection. There is also a children's garden. The house was restored in 1964 and contains a resource library; the early 19th Century Bates-Scofield Barn was added as exhibition space and for storage of objects from the society’s collections, allowing the society to mount costume exhibitions as well as show never-seen flags, quilts and paintings from its collections. The spring exhibition highlighted Darien's Boys in Blue: the Civil War and Fitch's Home for Soldiers, exploring the origins of universal care for veterans.
There are regular history programs for children. The historical society is open Tuesday through Friday, 9 to 4; there are changing exhibits relating to the history of Darien. House tours are offered upon request.
