Bridgeport-Port Jefferson Ferry

Want to take a boat trip? Some people actually commute this way, but others find it a more relaxing way to start a visit to Long Island. The Bridgeport & Port Jefferson ferry provides a 75-minute cruise across Long Island Sound with departures about every 90 minutes, depending on the season. The ferry terminal is at the Union Square Dock, adjacent to the Bridgeport Metro-North train station and just a short distance from I-95. Adult round trip tickets are $25; children under 13 travel free with an adult and there is a senior citizen rate, $17. A car and driver are about $51 one-way; with unlimited passengers, $67 Monday-Thursday (otherwise there's an additional charge).

The ferries have snack bars, cocktail lounges and open decks for those who want to soak up the sunshine and salt air. Wireless Internet is available. Port Jefferson is a picturesque village with shops, restaurants, a marina, hotel and parking. It’s a good spot for bicycling, so consider bringing bicycles with you. Advance reservations for cars are a must during the summer, and may be made by phone or online at the ferry Web site.
