The Discovery Center at Ridgefield, a non-profit “center without walls,” has been providing family and children’s programs since 1985. The center’s mission is to foster an appreciation of nature, science, history, and the arts in all persons, particuarly the young. From nature walks to astronomy programs to events with live animals or birds, the center’s offerings are planned to appeal to people of all ages and interests. By not being restricted to one site, the Discovery Center takes advantage of diverse facilities, open spaces and private lands that make the programs flexible and innovative.
Monthly Family Adventures have included trips to view eagles at the Shepaug Dam, experiencing maple sugaring, and celebrating Women’s History Month. For children there are Art Explorers and Nature Explorers programs in which children learn about art, nature and science with hands-on activities. For adults, the center offers walking tours of historic Ridgefield sites, hiking groups and other special interest presentations. Members participate in most programs free, or for a small fee; there are usually six programs a month and family memberships are $50; individuals, $30.
To participate in Discovery Center programs: visit ridgefielddiscovery.org or call 203-438-1063. Non-members pay a fee, usually $5.
