A non-profit environmental education center whose mission is to connect people with the land, cultivating an active appreciation of the natural world, New Pond Farm in Redding was founded by actress Carmen Mathews and is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. Programs focus on the environment, lifeways of Native Americans, astronomy, farming and the arts. Set on 102 acres of natural habitats and farming terrains, the education center property includes 19th Century barns with dairy cows, sheep and chickens, a Learning Center, astronomy buildings, an authentically recreated Indian encampment and a syruping shed. The property and its 2.5 miles of trails are open daily to members of the farm for hiking, picnicking and cross-country skiing.
Membership benefits include a quarterly newsletter and calendar, lower rates on all programs and many popular members-only activities throughout the seasons. During the school year, the farm offers a wide variety of educational programs to area schoolchildren as well as adults, families and children. Each summer, New Pond Farm also hosts a residential summer camp for urban youth. An invitational art show will take place at New Pond Farm June 11-25.
New Pond Farm is at 101 Marchant Road in West Redding, near the intersection with Umpawaug Road. For more information, visit
