Thanks to the efforts of the Norwalk Seaport Association, the classic stone Sheffield Island Lighthouse, now decommissioned, remains a beacon for visitors. Since 1986, the association has owned, restored and maintained the lighthouse on Sheffield Island, which is part of the Steward B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge. Access to the island is by ferry from the Seaport Dock off Water Street at Washington Street in South Norwalk. There are weekend trips May 28-Sept. 25 with Monday through Friday trips added from late June to early September. Fees are $22 for adults, $20 for seniors, $12 for children 4-12 and $5 for ages 3 and younger. The Seaport Association also offers Norwalk Islands Bird Watching Cruises on certain mornings at high tide from June 4 through Aug. 10, with commentary by master wildlife conservationist Larry Flynn. Sunset harbor cruises are offered on Wednesdays and Clambakes at Sheffield Island Lighthouse on Thursdays by reservation during the summer.
Birthday parties and special events may be scheduled on certain days. The ferry does not run during The Norwalk Oyster Festival, Sept. 9-11, which is a major fund-raiser for the Seaport Association.
