Tarrywile Park in Danbury

Tarrywile Park on Southern Boulevard in Danbury is a former estate that has been transformed into a place for hikers and strollers. Its 654 hilly acres are open sunrise to sunset daily, free of charge, for activities that range from hiking, cross country skiing and running to picnicking and bird watching. There are more than 21 miles of trails and a new map is available for hikers to orient themselves. Sections of the Tarrywile trails are linked into the nearly complete 14-mile Ives Trail that will go from Bethel to Ridgefield’s Bennett's Pond property. At Tarrywile, there are two picnic areas and formal gardens, which surround the mansion, often in use on weekends for weddings and receptions. The 23-room building was designed and built in 1896 by the New York architects Child and DeGoll for Dr. William C. Wile. Staff offer a variety of programs for adults and children during the year, including guided hikes and bird watching. Dogs are allowed in the park but must be kept on leash. Office hours are weekdays, 9 to 4.
