Wolf Conservation Center

The Wolf Conservation Center has a clear mission: it “promotes wolf conservation by teaching about wolves, their relationship to the environment, and the human role in protecting their future.” Founded by pianist Hélène Grimaud and photographer Henry Fair in South Salem, N.Y., the center is home to ambassador wolf Atka, an Arctic gray wolf, who makes visits to schools and nature centers. In the past year, the center's three other ambassador wolves, Kaila, Lukas and Apache, died at advanced ages. New ambassador wolf pups were being introduced this spring. The center is also part of the Species Survival Program for endangered red and Mexican gray wolves. Visitors are welcome and may register to attend one of the center’s programs; directions are given when a visit is arranged. Groups of 10 or more can also be accommodated.

The center presents a series of workshops designed to introduce people to its work on behalf of wolves. Subjects include: Wolves for Kids, Wolves of North America, and Evening Howl. Some of the Evening Howls are for families and some are for adults only. There are also special evenings for families with children under 6. The center also offers occasional special photography sessions from vantage points not generally available during regular visits; participants must be at least 13 years old.
