The Westport Arts Center has a bright location overlooking the Saugatuck River with a large gallery space and administrative offices. Gallery hours are 10-4, Monday-Friday; 12-4, weekends, during exhibits. The center provides an online gallery for artist members’ work and, during the summer, hosts a series of juried solo shows as well as a non-juried group show by member artists. Visual arts director Helen Klisser During keeps the focus on current themes in contemporary arts in the three to four curated exhibitions each year at the arts center. She hosts a weekly free Art Café at the gallery on Fridays from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., for informal discussions. The Arts Center produces music series as well as series on film, theater and literary topics and children's and youth workshops. New thisyear has been a storytelling series for adults.
For the past several years, the center has sponsored the Westport Youth Film Festival, run by youth for youth. Events are presented at venues in and around Westport, including at the Westport Country Playhouse. Summer Arts Camp for children ages 5-10 will offer sessions from July 5 to Aug. 26.
From the Post Road in Westport take Riverside Avenue (opposite Route 33/Wilton Road) about a block south. The center is at 51 Riverside Avenue; for more information, 203-222-7070. The Web site is www.westportartscenter.org.
