Each week, the Reel Dad checks the nutritional value of a movie — new or classic — to help parents choose what to watch with their children. This week’s pick is a new film, RED.

Any movie that gives the great Ernest Borgnine — now age 93 — a few days’ work can’t be all bad. And RED is not, by any means, all bad. It’s just not very good, certainly not as clever as the advertisements promise, and clearly not a film that everyone in the family will enjoy. What it offers, at best, is a mindless movie diversion for parents who enjoy seeing old stars shoot ‘em up for a couple of hours. RED feels as if it has been written and directed by committee, with each member trying to make a different film, and featuring a parade of actors who don’t have to break a sweat to entertain. Other than an employment opportunity for this collection of favorite performers, RED doesn’t offer much. But Oscar-winner Borgnine does have a good time.
