Living on One founders to speak in Southport

Chris Temple and Zach Ingrasci, founders of Living on One.Two young founders of the non-profit organization Living on One will speak at Pequot Library, 720 Pequot Avenue, Southport, on Wednesday, March 6, from 7 to 8:30pm. Chris Temple and Zach Ingrasci will also show a brief segment of their upcoming film about what is it like to live in extreme poverty. Could you budget only one dollar a day to survive?
While living in a rural Guatemalan village in 2010 as university students, Zach Ingrasci and Chris Temple (co-founders of Living on One), asked that question every day. Their Fairfield County upbringing didn’t prepare them for what they would go through living at a level the majority of inhabitants in this world experience. They battled e.Coli, financial stress, and the realization that there are no easy answers to living on One Dollar per day.
Zach Ingrasci and Chris Temple are the founders of the non-profit organization Living on One. While living in a tiny, tin-roofed house, crowded into the hills of Guatemala, they found hope in the inspiring lives of their neighbors and friends. These people showed them how access to small amounts of money can empower a woman to bring herself and her family out of poverty. They will show a segment of their full length documentary, Living on One Dollar. It is an empowering and engaging story, and shows how microfinance can be a sustainable way to combat extreme poverty. Temple and Ingrasci will integrate footage from the film into a talk that will inspire all. Q & A session will follow the talk. Temple grew up in Fairfield and Norwalk and attended Greens Farms Academy from 6th to 12th grade. He played tennis and soccer locally as well as for Greens Farms, he grew up in Greenfield Hill near Pequot Library.
Temple says, "We graduated from college in May, 2012, immediately hit the road, and have now spoken in 25 cities around the country. The reactions to our events have been incredibly inspiring. To see 300 people cram into a 200 person room to learn about global poverty is unique, and the reason we are dedicating our lives to the cause."
Their teaser videos were viewed over 650,000 times on YouTube, and they have been featured on CBS with Charlie Rose. They have combined worked for 5 different microfinance organizations and are fellows of Creative Visions Foundation and Ashoka Youth Venture. Ingrasci and Temple are speaking at the UNIS-UN conference in the General Assembly Hall. Temple and Ingrasci have given a TEDx talk and they were recently endorsed by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus, as well as the former CEO of Miramax, Michael Lang.
Living on One works in partnership with Whole Foods Market and its nonprofit Whole Planet Foundation® whose shared mission is to fund poverty alleviation through microcredit in developing communities where Whole Foods Market sources products around the world.
“More than 1 billion people worldwide live on one dollar a day. To fully understand this level of poverty, one must experience it,” said Philip Sansone, executive director of Whole Planet Foundation. “This film will inspire people to join the fight against poverty and is a clear reminder that the fight begins not with charity or government welfare, but by empowering people with the tools and resources they need to lift themselves out of poverty.”
