An all-season destination, Splash Restaurant, which opened as Splash Pacific Rim Grill in 1995 at Westport’s Longshore Country Club, features a combined Asian fusion and contemporary American menu prepared by Chef David Repp and Sous Chef Omar Soto.
The owners, the DeCaro family of Weston, also owns and operates Bang, a popular Asian fusion restaurant in Greenwich.
With Splash, a waterside restaurant, commanding an ever-changing view of Long Island Sound, comes an active patio scene with outdoor entertainment during summer and ice skating and magical sunsets during the fall and winter. On a recent evening, some guests chose to dine in the lobby in front of the fireplace to catch the early sunset view.
According to general manager David Thelen, Splash “takes on a whole new identity during the fall and winter months when the atmosphere is more peaceful and romantic during the week, but stays vibrant on Saturday nights.”
A crab and roasted red pepper soup was enjoyed on a chilly evening. Also a hit was a green salad with dried cherry vinaigrette, five-spice pecans and goat cheese dumplings; and roasted chicken salad with fried wonton skins, Napa cabbage, and sesame vinaigrette.
Among the signature appetizers are firecracker spring rolls with chicken, peanuts, and honey mustard sauce; crispy sea salad gratin with jobiko mayonnaise, sweet soy and asparagus; Angry Mussels, spicy jalapeno broth, peppers, onions, chorizo, cranberry beans and garlic toast; and ahi tuna tartare with pickled ginger vinaigrette, wasabi crème fraîche and crispy wonton chips.
A choice winter dish was slow-braised tamarind short ribs with a natural reduction, roasted cipollini onions with whipped potatoes. Always a favorite, Chilean sea bass was baked in a banana leaf and served with a coconut ice cake, soy-glazed carrots and mango salsa.
You will also be temped by Australian lamb two ways; pan-seared Yucatan shrimp; maple-glazed grilled organic salmon; and a choice of steak Shanghai-style and macadamia-crusted swordfish.
If you’re going to share a dessert, order the bittersweet chocolate pagoda — brownies layered with praline mousse with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. You’ll also be tempted by a crème brûlée trio: blueberry-vanilla, mint, and coconut lemongrass; raspberry-peach cheesecake with caramelized raspberries and fresh cream; and strawberry mousse, almond cookie crust, strawberries, with orange whipped cream.
