Second Congregational Church will hold a discussion of the nonfiction book Take This Bread: A Radical Conversion by Sara Miles, on Sunday, Oct. 2 (World Communion Sunday), at 4:30 p.m. in the parlor of the church, at 139 E. Putnam Ave. in Greenwich. The Rev. Holly Adams, transitional senior minister, will lead the conversation. Refreshments will be served.
The story of an unexpected and terribly inconvenient Christian conversion, told by a very unlikely convert, Take This Bread is not only a spiritual memoir but a call to action, according to a news release.
“Raised as an atheist, Ms. Miles lived an enthusiastically secular life as a restaurant cook and writer,” an announcement about the event continued. “Then early one morning, for no earthly reason, she wandered into a church. ‘I was certainly not interested in becoming a Christian,’ she writes. ‘Or, as I thought of it rather less politely, a religious nut.’ But she ate a piece of bread, took a sip of wine, and found herself radically transformed.”
