The YWCA Darien/Norwalk Newcomers Club has been welcoming residents since 1954. A group run by women who are also newcomers, it is designed to help women who are new to the community to quickly feel at home. There are plenty of opportunities to make new friends through activities including ladies nights out, a monthly book club, informal playgroups, volunteering opportunities and couples activities including the gourmet and winetasters groups.
The Newcomers Wine and Cheese event this past Fall was held at a member’s home and attended by close to 60 new area residents, most of which had moved in over the summer.
“When I moved to town, everyone told me to join the YWCA Newcomers Club and that’s how I made my best friends here,” Lida Ward, a YWCA member, said.
The co-chairmen of this year’s Newcomers Wine and Cheese events are Laura Baum, Beth Ann Kissko, Jori Meyer and Carlyle Upson who are all newcomers to Darien themselves. Fellow newcomer Heather Curran is this year’s YWCA Darien/Norwalk Newcomers Club president.
