Brian O’Neill, a former writer and editor for the Yemen Observer, will be the third speaker in the Darien Community Association’s 2011 Academic Lecture Series on Global Issues next Thursday, Jan. 20, at 10.
O’Neill, an independent analyst currently based out of Chicago, will present a lecture titled, Multiplying the Threat: The Minor Role and Major Impact of Al-Qaeda in Yemen.

A monthly caregiver educational support group meets at the senior center next on Tuesday, Jan. 18, from 1-2:30.
If you are caring for a family member or friend with multiple needs, especially related to cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s type dementia, this group could be beneficial.

The topic this month is Taking Mini Vacations and will be led by senior center coordinator Beth Paris, who has been a support group facilitator for the past 15 years and a guest instructor for the Caregiver Training Programs that the Alzheimer’s Association runs.
This group is run in affiliation with the Southwestern Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.
Each month a different caring giving topic is presented and discussed and there is time for group members to ask questions, share individual concerns and ideas.

The Darien Players’ 31st season with “Crossing Delancey” by Susan Sandler closes this weekend with performances Friday, Jan. 21 and Saturday, Jan. 22.
Isabel is a modern young woman who lives alone and works in a book shop.
When she is not pining after a handsome author, she is visiting her grandmother, Bubbie, in Manhattan’s Lower East Side.

This irascible granny and her friend the matchmaker have found a “good catch” for Isabel, whose initial reluctance gives way to a blossoming romance when she finally meets Sam the pickle vendor at the end of the play which offers a new beginning.
Director Richard Mancini previously directed the successful war drama “Cry Havoc” for the Players.

Atria Darien will showcase the paintings of Rowayton artist Susan O’Neill on Saturday, Jan. 8, from 4-6.
This will be O’Neill’s farewell show.

The YWCA Darien/Norwalk invites all new area residents to its Newcomers Wine and Cheese Ladies Night on Wednesday, Jan. 12, at 7:30.
