The Darien Library will hold its second annual Independent Film Series on Friday nights in January, at 7:30 p.m. The library will host screenings of independent films in the community room. Last January, the library tried an experiment and dedicated its Friday Night Film Series to screening the indies, and the limited-release films were a success with audiences.

The Chamber Choir of the West Chester University (Pennsylvania) will perform on Thursday, Jan. 13, at the Darien United Methodist Church, 345 Middlesex Road, at 7:30 PM.

The West Chester Chamber Choir tours regularly, including recent excursions to California, Florida, the Southwest and the Northeast and Europe. The choir strives to perform, in a historically sensitive manner, music of all styles and epochs from the past five centuries. The concert is open to all.

Singer, songwriter and Darien native Chris Black visited the Middlesex Middle School orchestra to share his passion for music last Thursday. Black performed for the students, talked about his life as a musician, and even invited students to play along on their own instruments.

Black encouraged the students to continue their study of music, and stressed the importance of exploring other styles on their instruments, including jazz, rock, and country.
Black will be performing at the Delancey, 168 Delancey St., New York) at 9 on Wednesday, Jan. 5, and his recordings can be heard at ChrisTheBlack.bandcamp.com.

Christopher Boucek of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, will lead off the Darien Community Association’s Annual Academic Lecture Series on Global Issues Thursday, Jan. 6, at 10 a.m. His lecture is Yemen on the Brink.

Boucek is a recognized expert on terrorism, security, and stability issues in Saudi Arabia and Yemen and an authority on rehabilitation and disengagement programs for Islamist militants and extremists. He frequently briefs U.S. and European governments on these Arabian Peninsula issues and is sought after as an analyst by the New York Times, Washington Post, PBS News Hour, CBS’ 60 Minutes, NPR, BBC, and CNN.

The Darien Nature Center, in response to parental requests, is offering a series of one-day-per-month after-school programs for elementary school children that focuses on what they like best: Animals.
