Finding some room to move spending into the current budget, the Board of Education Monday approved an $81.4 million 2012-13 budget, which is a $2.2 million, or 2.72% increase over the current $79.2 million budget.
The drop from the superintendent's proposed 3.26% increase is mostly thanks to $380,000 in electricity savings in the current 2011-12 budget relating to the news in recent months that CL&P had overcharged the school district $4.3 million over eight years.
"We are doing this in consultation with the Board of Finance," said Board of Education member Amy Shinohara, who said the finance board indicated the school board would not be expected to return the money originally appropriated for electricity bills within the current budget.

A 2.39% tax increase appears to be the starting point for the Board of Selectmen’s budget work.
They began looking this week at a $127-million budget showing School Superintendent Deborah Low’s proposed 3.26% spending increase, combined with requests from town department heads that total up to a 2.95% increase in non-school agencies’ spending.
Together the proposed budgets — $32 million for town departments and $82 million for schools — plus a 3% drop in debt service amount to a 2.41% overall spending increase.

From academic achievement and pressure on kids to budgets and a school closing, school board candidates took stands on issues in response to questions by The Press.
Seven candidates are vying for five open school board seats. Three are incumbents.
The two Democrats in the race are Adeline ‘Lyn’ Merrill, an incumbent who heads of WestConn’s education department and worked many years as teacher and administrator in the Ridgefield schools; and Karen Sulzinsky, a former TV news writer and owner of a local TV production company who is a Ridgefield PTA officer with two children in the schools.

Schlumberger, the library, debt, budgets, priorities — serious issues face the town and selectmen candidates staked out their positions in response to questions from The Press.
Five candidates are competing for four open Board of Selectmen seats in Tuesday’s town election. The race features four incumbents — Republicans Andrew Bodner and Maureen Kozlark, and Democrats Barbara Manners and Di Masters — and an unaffiliated petitioning candidate, Jan Rifkinson, who has regularly attended and voiced opinions at selectmen’s and other town meetings in recent years.
For first selectman, Democratic incumbent Rudy Marconi will be on the ballot unopposed, so he was not asked to answer the questions.

For Zoning Board Appeals, two regular five-year board seats are up for election, as are three seats for alternates, two of whom are filling out the terms of vacancies.
Democrat Sky Cole is challenging incumbent Republican David Choplinski for one full-time board seat, and challenging incumbent Michael Stenko for a five-year alternate seat.
Mr. Cole is also running unopposed to fill a four-year alternate vacancy, and Mr. Choplinski is unopposed for a one-year alternate vacancy. Republican Duane Barney is unopposed for a five-year full-time board seat.Page 6 of 13
