This week marks the end of the Growing Up Greenwich Column for the summer. With the academic year coming to a close, many other significant endings have taken place. Having graduated from Greenwich High School on June 20, I am no longer a student in the Greenwich Public School System. For the last 13 years of my life, there has always been an element of certainty when it came to my education. Even when graduating from Parkway Elementary School or Western Middle School, there was a sense of familiarity with the new school I would be attending and there were always the friends I had become accustomed to seeing each year. But this year, as I look to the future, things seem much more uncertain. As I head off to college without the security blanket of my closest friends and family, I can’t help but experience nostalgia for all of the memorable experiences I have had growing up in Greenwich.I can still remember my first day of kindergarten at Parkway. As I stepped off the school bus I met the smiling faces of various faculty members and was ushered through a sea of students towards my teacher, Mrs. Moore. That first day of kindergarten was incredibly eye opening for me. I had never been away from my parents for more than a couple of hours at a time, and had never been assigned to a specific desk at which I was required to sit.

The Internet overwhelms me. Can you help? —R.G.
Dear R.G.,In a recent column, I compared the Internet to television studios that produce programming delivered to you via your service provider. I went on to describe how an Internet user might select a Web page by entering an Internet address — much like tuning in a television channel. As an example, we typed abcnews.com into the Address Box of an Internet browser (such as Internet Explorer or Firefox), which brought up the ABC News Web site.

For years I collected parenting books, from Dr. Spock to Dr. Seuss, poring over them to find the perfect formula for fatherhood, that elusive alchemy of wisdom, discipline, love and high blood pressure.
Even though I memorized every imaginable tactic, my kids did what they wanted anyway, and when they got older, I abandoned my crusade and went to the used book store to recoup some of my investment, but the guy tossed the books aside and grumbled, “I can’t buy these.”
“Why? Doesn’t everyone want to be a better parent?”
“This stuff changes every time someone comes up with a crazy new theory.” So I went to the recycling center instead and consigned all that wasted wisdom to the Dumpster.
