It is difficult to believe, but Greenwich Academy’s commencement took place on Thursday, May 26. The class of 2011 is done with high school.
That interminable stretch, those seemingly never-ending four years are finally over. It is all very surreal. At the risk of sounding cliché, it is also bittersweet.
On one hand, college is quite an exciting prospect; on the other, leaving high school means leaving an entire life behind. Everything we worked so hard to build over the past four years (or more for some) is no longer going to be a part of our daily lives. We have a blank slate in front of us and are faced with the daunting task of filling it.

I’m a big guy. Not self-important, but large. So when I’m riding Metro-North at rush hour and the only available seats are those dreaded middle seats in the three-seat rows, I’d rather stand. Why inflict my girth on two fellow passengers and make three of us uncomfortable instead of just one (me)?
Taking public transportation is a compromise. We all must give a little and share the same space, sometimes in much closer proximity than we’d like. Sometimes this can lead to conflict.
Consider the following cases, all true and all from just the past few weeks:
On an eight-hour flight from the UK to the Barbados, a fist-fight erupted involving a dozen passengers. Half way across the Atlantic, a group of passengers celebrating “something special” got into a fight with another passenger who complained that they had cursed in front of her child. The verbal attacks quickly turned physical with fists flying. It took other passengers and crew a half-hour to quell the melee. Barbados police arrested the trouble-makers on landing.

I often thought my life would have turned out different if my parents named me something with a little flair, like Gaga or 50 Cent or Sting — I would have even settled for Stung or 10 Cent. The name “Joe” just seemed so commonplace.
If they called me Brad, I could have been a movie star, or Hugh and I could have been a playboy, J-Rod, a pro ballplayer, or Barack, a world leader. Instead, I got the most common name in the world, so overused it inspired GI Joe, Joe Blow, Average Joe, Ordinary Joe and cup of Joe.
What were my parents thinking? I suppose they wanted to carry on the family tradition because my father was Joe and my mother was Josephine. Even worse, when I was a kid, they didn’t have the good sense to call me Joe Jr. or Joey or Little Joe but rather — I hate to admit — JoJo, like that monkey on TV.Page 5 of 38
