In June of 2003, Lisa Hadlow was a mother who just moved to Darien from Canada, with three children younger than five.

While visiting St. Paul’s Church, a mother approached her about joining an organization called MOPS — Mothers of Preschoolers. Hadlow thought it would be a good way to meet other mothers and gain some friends, because she didn’t know anyone in town. “I was like the ideal member for this group,” Hadlow said, since she had three children of pre-school age.

Each child had a total of 10 balls to rally as many balls as they could. “It was really phenomenal to watch how hard the kids were trying and their level of concentration,” said Merrideth Hammill, who started the charity and whose husband, John, is the tennis director at the Tokeneke Club.

Encouraging news recently came in from Maine: “Most islands are reporting an exceptionally good summer for herring — an important component of puffin and tern diets,” according to Project Puffin.

This is good news, but not just for puffins and the many species of terns on Egg Island, and other granite-layered, conservation-protected islands off the coast of Maine. It is also encouraging news for the Darien Land Trust, which has joined Connecticut’s efforts to help build the populations of alewives, a type of river herring on which the osprey, some shore birds and many large fish depend on for sustenance. Once they’ve spawned in a freshwater pond or lake, alewives head downstream and out to the Atlantic Ocean where they swim with deep-water Atlantic herring that are important to the survival of puffins and terns.

Middlesex Middle School student Caroline Wetteraux was given an assignment to write a letter using the principles of persuasion. A seventh grader, Caroline used this lesson to convince her parents that she should be allowed to raise a future guide dog for Guiding Eyes for the Blind.

Her letter did the trick, and today she is raising Chicklet, a black labrador.

Caroline recently met with the Student Council to request their support of a collection of sports balls. She explained their use in helping Guiding Eyes dogs reach their full potential through enhanced stimulation and energy outlets. To promote the collection, posters were placed throughout the school and Caroline made announcements on the school PA system every day for two weeks. A large box was placed in the school lobby to collect the items — soccer balls, footballs, basketballs and tennis balls.
