Editorial: Starting over

It is time to start over. The election is over.

The Board of Selectmen will start over with some new faces, many of whom have little to no political baggage, including new First Selectman David Campbell. All the town boards will have new faces. The RTM included. It is spring time in Darien politics.

If Mr. Campbell and his team are true to their campaign words, Darien is changing. No longer will Darienites be working against one another, but instead together, for the town’s mutual good. Rather than simply saying it. It will be exciting to see it happen.

Perhaps all of Darien’s officials can all take that approach. And, like Mr. Campbell, empty out that political baggage that has slowed a lot of Darien down. Put past grudges aside. Be constructive with criticism. Focus on the positive during difficult economic times.

Support and encourage our town’s volunteers and political leaders. Get involved yourself if you aren’t already.

In the spirit of losing that political baggage, we’d like to re-invite you, our readers to our Thursday Coffee with The Times.

The Coffee with The Times has been going on since the 1990s and remains today a lively discussion about the town’s issues, the country’s issues, and some jokes and friendly discussion about anything and everything. We have our regulars, our loyal attendees who read our paper and some who have become our friends.

However, just because we have our regulars does not mean that others are not welcome. In the spirit of putting aside the past and starting over, we again invite you, newcomers and regulars, to have coffee with your Darien Times staff.

We invite the newly elected and returning town officials, especially First Selectman David Campbell. We invite the moms and dads. The seniors and singles. Commuters. College students returning home for a visit. And everyone in between.

We want to hear from you. We want to get to know our readers. We want to represent your viewpoint and follow up on the news you want to learn more about. We want to answer your questions and get your story ideas.

The Coffee with The Times is Thursday at 10 a.m., at the Sugar Bowl. You’ll find us in the back. It can get a little crowded, but we can always make room.

We, like all the newly elected and returning town officials after this election, want to start over.

And the coffee is on us.
