Since the Joel Barlow High girls lacrosse team had defeated New Milford by just one goal earlier in the season, it was no surprise that the South-West Conference Division I quarterfinal game between the two opponents would also be as evenly matched.

It was such a battle that after two full halves of lacrosse the teams were deadlocked, bringing on overtime on Monday, May 21. The stalemate continued for nearly two extra periods before the third-seeded Green Wave slipped the game-winning shot in the net, upsetting the third-seeded Falcons for a 16-15 sudden victory in double overtime in a light rain.

The loss also ended a 10-game winning streak for the Falcons

Barlow trailed New Milford for much of the first half before battling back to eventually tie it at 8-8. When play resumed it still remained anyone’s game as each side had an answer for the other’s efforts.

The first extra period decided little. If appeared the second would follow suit but with under 10 seconds to go the Green Wave stunned the hosts with what turned out to be the game-winning shot.

Despite the loss the Falcons featured a balanced scoring effort. Only one Barlow player netted more than two goals.

That was Kaitlin O’Brien with three. Brielle Kolf (one assist), River Kynoch, Libby Barlow and Olivia Sennett all scored two each. Virginia Barlow scored one and Maddie Cammarota had an assist.

Allie O’Hara made 10 saves in goal for Barlow.

Now 15-5, Barlow will compete in the state Class M tournament starting next week.
