CANDIDATE RESPONSES: Mark Pompa, Board of Finance

Mark Pompa, a Republican, is running for a two-year seat on the Board of Finance. He currently is a member of the Board of Finance.

Name and explain two ways to improve the town’s finances.

With Easton’s tax base being primarily residential, and household incomes at best stable in the current economic climate, the Board of Finance needs to continue its efforts to minimize core cost escalation through either more strategic procurement of supplies/services as well as the cost of insurance/benefits. The combination of the foregoing with an activity-based budgeting methodology will yield the most efficient spending structure that can enhance/preserve town services while minimizing overall spending escalation.

Do people want more services or lower taxes?

Based on my interactions within the community, there is clearly support in both camps. The better question is how can we get more out of current spending levels, assuming operating costs will continue to increase prospectively? I believe with some structural cost changes, we can accomplish the re-balancing of the town’s spending to areas in need while minimizing the escalation of property taxes.

What makes you qualified for this position?

As an individual who has spent the entirety of his 20-plus-year professional career in finance, I believe my skill set is best suited for the Board of Finance. With budgetary responsibilities ranging from a low of $5 million to well in excess of $1 billion, I believe my breadth of experience is directly on point. My current involvement on the Board of Finance over the last three years has come at an interesting time for Easton as most significant capital projects have been completed and enrollment statistics have begun to stabilize.
