Choosing the right defensive approach was key to the Joel Barlow High girls basketball team’s performance in its game at Bunnell.
The Falcons had to decide whether to stop their opponent under the basket or along the perimeter. They decided on the former.
Such a move paid off as they held the Bulldogs to under 50 points in a 60-43 win last Friday, Feb. 3.

The opportunity to set the tone for the game escaped the Joel Barlow High boys varsity basketball team when it visited New Milford last week.
Had the Falcons made some easy shots early in the night it could have given them the momentum they needed last Tuesday, Jan. 31. Instead they received a battle from their opponent the whole time before losing a 69-62 decision.
“We were a step slow, a little flat,” said Barlow head coach Seth Babikian “We missed some easy baskets early.”
Yet the Falcons, who trailed just 13-12 at the end of the first quarter, stayed in contention right up until late in the game. Written by Michael Mattson

While the Immaculate-Joel Barlow High wrestling team could withstand several forfeits against one opponent it was not as fortunate against another in a dual match last Saturday.
The team was without eligible wrestlers in four weight classes. Such made for a close 30-26 win over Brookfield but was far short in a 57-18 loss to host New Milford.

One of its highest scores of the season was not enough for the Joel Barlow High gymnastics team to turn the tables on Wilton last week.
The Falcons totaled 120.75 points on Thursday, Feb. 2. That would get them only so far against undefeated Wilton, one of the top teams in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Conference this season. The undefeated Warriors continued their run with a 138.25.

The competition got a little faster for the Joel Barlow High girls ski team in its race at Mount Southington last week.
The Falcons, who have made short work of their opponents so far, had their hands full with one team in particular at Mount Southington on Wednesday, Feb. 1. While their total time of 316.19 seconds was good for wins against Wilton (320.56), Amity (364.35) and Branford (disqualified), they could not catch defending State Open champ Fairfield (308.19). They are now 9-1 overall.
