What turned out to be the closest game of the season was in a sense also the most significant so far for the Joel Barlow High football team when it visited Brookfield last week.

When the game was over the Falcons were not only sitting on top of just any victory. By holding on 22-20 on Friday, Nov. 13, they earned their first win over their opponent in 22 years.

With one championship under its belt the Joel Barlow High girls volleyball team appears to be on course in its quest for another.

The Falcons, who won the South-West Conference title earlier this month, have apparently carried this winning momentum into the state Class M tournament, which started last week. They are now just two wins away from their first-ever state championship.

“Unlucky” is a word that may be overused in soccer banter, but it was an apt description of the Joel Barlow High boys soccer team’s situation against Ellington in the state Class M Tournament last week.

A confluence of missed opportunities, poor calls and an opponent’s uncanny ability to capitalize on far fewer opportunities spelled trouble for the Falcons. Despite being ranked fifth going into the tournament, the Falcons ended the season earlier than expected with a 2-1 loss to their 12th-ranked opponent at home last Thursday, Nov. 12.

Caity Van Camp looked surprised when she stood up to accept the South-West Conference tournament’s most valuable player award following the Joel Barlow High girls volleyball team’s match against Bunnell.

The senior captain pointed to her teammates while they in turn rushed to congratulate her as the sixth-seeded Falcons upset top-seeded Bunnell 3-1 (25-21, 26-24, 21-25, 25-23) on Saturday, Nov. 7, at Oxford High for their third SWC title and second in three seasons.

Regardless of how it would finish in the field of competitors, the Joel Barlow High girls swim team accomplished something for its efforts at the South-West Conference finals last week.

Improving their times was well within the reach of the Falcons, who were one of 12 teams at the Masuk High pool on Saturday, Nov. 7. A number of them did that while earning 112.50 points to place ninth overall, a slight improvement from last season’s performance.
