Records tell you one thing, but the sport of volleyball makes a team prove its worth every match.

“It is such a mental sport,” Fairfield Ludlowe girls volleyball coach Meghan Skelton said. “It takes all 15 players on our squad to get us where we want to be. We are fortunate to have a deep bench.”

The second-seeded Falcons defeated Ridgefield, 3-1, with a berth in the Class LL state semifinals on the line at home on Saturday night.

Ludlowe will play top-seeded Southington (20-1) for the state title on Nov. 21 at 7:30 p.m. at Berlin High.

The Fairfield Ludlowe High boys soccer team did everything but score a goal in the first half of its Class L second round contest with top-seeded Platt Tech on Nov. 12.

The 16th-seeded Falcons, with the wind at their backs, took the game to the Panthers but failed to break through with a goal.

When prolific Platt Tech striker Jose Campos smashed home a free kick in the 67th minute, that early domination by Ludlowe seemed a distant memory.

Eight players strong, members of Andrew Warde High School’s 1959 state championship football team stood behind their coach Fern Tetreau, as the then Crimson Eagle mentor addressed the crowd on hand Oct. 30 to honor the squad that posted a perfect 9-0 record during a magical campaign.

At halftime of Warde’s game with St. Joseph, and on the field that was dedicated in his name in 2006, Tetreau spoke of the bucket brigade that picked up rocks on the field prior to practice.

Fairfield Ludlowe looked to shake things up when coach Meghan Skelton’s Falcons played host to Darien High in an FCIAC girls volleyball match on Oct. 26.

Ludlowe had won 13 straight matches and brought a 15-1 record on to the floor.

Darien was 16-0 and coach Laurie LaRusso’s Blue Wave had not yet given up a game.

In fact, after having a 140-match win streak snapped by Greenwich in the second match of the 2008 season, Darien went on to win 16 in a row before capturing its eighth straight FCIAC crown and adding an eight straight state championship.

There was no other choice.

To start its FCIAC football game with Trinity Catholic, Fairfield Warde had the option of getting first crack on offense or choosing to play the first quarter with the wind sweeping Tetreau-Davis Field at its back.

With 1:20 remaining in regulation, coach Duncan DellaVolpe’s Mustangs had to march 64 yards into a driving wind-aided rain if they wanted to defeat the Crusaders.
