Families invited to printmaker event

The Bruce Museum presents Calder Family Day from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 22.

The event is presented in conjunction with the Bruce Museum’s current exhibition “Alexander Calder: Printmaker,” on view through Jan. 31.

Calder Family Day includes a gallery hunt plus art-making activities throughout the afternoon in the museum’s education workshop. At 3 p.m., the family show “Calder Re-Wired” is being presented by actor, dancer and mime Carlton van Pyrz. This interactive performance features elements of Calder’s famous Circus, his wire sculpture, mobiles and stabiles. “Calder Re-Wired” brings to life the prints, sculptures, stabiles and mobiles of Alexander Calder using mime, mask, puppetry, narration and music. The influences of Calder’s work are explored in a light-hearted array of stories and vignettes based loosely on his true life experiences. All activities are suitable for people of all abilities five years old and older, and are free with museum admission.

The exhibition “Alexander Calder: Printmaker,” organized by the Bruce Museum, brings together 28 prints made by Calder comprised of literary illustrations, poster designs, studies related to sculptures and paintings, and ostensibly independent compositions, the artist’s prints intersect with his more famous works while also providing insight into his working process.
