Youth council to hold dance to help children in Haiti

The Save the Children’s Greenwich Leadership Youth Council will hold the “Hope for Haiti” dance from 9 to midnight, Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Arch Street Teen Center. All high school students are invited.

The Greenwich Leadership Youth Council promotes Save the Children’s mission of creating lasting and positive change in the lives of children in need in the U.S. and around the world. The Youth Council is comprised of students from private and public schools in Fairfield County. The Youth Council has previously organized three dances that have successfully raised enough funds to build and maintain a school for girls in the West Darfur region of Sudan. This year they have organized a dance to raise money for health and education in Haiti.

“The hard work that goes into making these dances such successes is evidence of the compassion and commitment of Greenwich’s teens to improving the lives of the world’s poorest children. Their work is an inspiration,” said Jennifer Cohen who is helping organize the dance this year.

Haiti is a country where 80% of the population lives below the poverty line and 54% live in utter poverty. Just 52% of the population older than 15 can read and write. Only 54% of the population has access to safe water, according to the Save the Children Web site.

Money raised by the dance will support education, health and nutrition programs in Haiti.

Students may buy tickets at Greenwich High School, Brunswick, Greenwich Academy and Convent of the Sacred Heart. There will also be a limited number sold at the door.
