Eva Silvia Ackermann Fossum of Cos Cob, wife of Ernest William Fossum Jr., died at home on Oct. 27.
Mrs. Fossum was born in Wuppertal, Germany, to the late Friederich and Hildegard Ackermann. She grew up in Germany and came to the United States in 1961 as an au pair, where she met and married Mr. Fossum. They settled first in Old Greenwich where they raised their three girls, and then moved to Cos Cob.
Mrs. Fossum enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, traveling, playing tennis and golf. She was the 2007 9 Hole Golf Champion for the Greenwich Women’s Golf Club. She was also an avid bridge player and enjoyed her weekly games. Mrs. Fossum was a lover of animals and enjoyed her many pets. She will be remembered as a beloved sister, devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Michaela Fossum, Nicole Vardakas and her husband, Lee, and Andrea Atkins and her husband, Michael; grandchildren Nicholas Vardakas, Laurel Vardakas, Finnegan Atkins and Heidi Atkins; and her sister Edda Ackermann and her brother Joachin Ackermann.
A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 19, at the First Congregational Church of Greenwich, 108 Sound Beach Ave., Old Greenwich. A private burial will take place before the memorial service. Donations may be made in her memory to The ALS Association, CT Chapter, 4 Oxford Road, Unit D4, Milford CT 06460.
