The Greenwich High School football team did exactly what it needed to against Westhill High School Friday night. After a three-week road trip and losing to Central 14-13 last week, the Cardinals finally returned to the friendly confines of Cardinal Stadium and took its aggression out on the Vikings, winning 45-7.

“We’re back on track,” Greenwich head coach Rich Albonizio said. “You can’t play your best all the time and last week we picked the wrong time and wrong team to do it against. Central is a good football team. Tonight it was very important for us to come out fast and put this team away. We didn’t want them to get any confidence and wanted to get focused on next week’s game.”

Although the Greenwich High School boys soccer team fell to Staples in the semifinals of the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference tournament Monday night at Fairfield Ludlowe’s Taft Field, head coach Kurt Putnam still is quite proud of his team’s performance.

“Today we came and played,” Putnam said. “We matched them for aggression, matched them for decision-making and focus. That’s why there were so few chances in the game. It was an incredibly close game at the end of the day.”

Brooke Cabrera, the Greenwich field hockey team’s standout senior goalie, tried to keep the outlook as positive as possible following the Cardinals exit from the FCIAC tournament.

“The FCIACs is over and we’re just going to focus on the first round of the States,” Cabrera said. “This game is in the past and we’re not looking back. We’re all playing together, we’re moving forward and we’re looking forward to States.”

Every now and then, Greenwich High School girls volleyball head coach Steve Lapham has to pinch himself to make sure he’s not dreaming.

With the loss last year of Erika Videtto, Olanna Nissum and other talented athletes, this year’s volleyball team was supposed to be in a rebuilding mode. Only one player had significant varsity experience and three other starters were new to the sport.

However, with all the adversity, Big Red has yet to be affected. As of press time, the Cardinals have only two games to play in the regular season and are sitting pretty with an impressive 14-2 overall record.
