Shelton Seahawks shut out Brewster for first win

On a cold, wet and windy Sunday morning, the AYF Shelton Seahawks stunned the seventh-grade team from Brewster (N.Y.) with a 24-0 victory, Shelton’s first of the season.

Once again, the Seahawks suited up only 14 players and Brewster came in with 38 strong.

The Seahawks dominated the ball on both sides of the line.

Behind a great effort by the offensive line, and excellent blocking by Matt Zelanin, Kyle Tobin, Peter Peng, Daniel Salvio, Jake Correia, Jacob Gauger and tight end Kevin Robinson, quarterback Brett Scanlon took snaps all day from center Steven Parravano and executed a flawless ground attack.

The Seahawks totaled 251 yards on the ground, with Jesse Lopez rushing for 174 yards on 16 carries and three touchdowns.

Lopez ran in scores from 11, 18 and 36 yards out.

Liam Cummings, who led Lopez with huge blocks, added 60 yards on the ground.

The Seahawks scored twice in the first half on a touchdown run by Lopez and a one-yard sneak by Scanlon.

Wingback Matt Terrasi had a big game, throwing blocks downfield for Lopez.

Defensively, Shelton controlled the line of scrimmage and forced turnovers.

Brewster spent most of the morning on defense as the Seahawks dominated the line and recovered a whopping 11 fumbles.

From his free safety position, Cummings had six tackles and two fumble recoveries.

Corner Sean Nielson also helped to contain Brewster’s offense all game.

Scanlon had two fumble recoveries, and Zelanin recovered a fumble and added three tackles.

Lopez had four forced fumbles, four tackles and two fumble recoveries, and lineman Kyle Tobin smothered five fumbles by Brewster.

Tobin rambled down the field from his fullback slot for 13 yards late in the fourth quarter, carrying a few Brewster players on his back.

Brewster tried a desperate pass play in the fourth quarter that was covered well by cornerback Nick Pena, preserving the shutout.
