The Shelton High football team put together its second straight dominating victory when coach Jeff Roys’ Gaels pinned a 42-7 victory on Fairfield Prep at Edward Finn Stadium on Oct. 23.
Shelton (3-3) will look to get on the front side of the win ledger when it visits Hillhouse High (3-3) for a Southern Connecticut Conference interdivisional game Friday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. at Bowen Field in New Haven. The Academics are coming off a 34-8 throttling of Jonathan Law, a team the Gaels handled by a 52-19 margin only a week earlier.
Spencer Jones ran for 160 yards a four first-half touchdowns for Hillhouse against Law (3-3).
The Acs came ready to play, holding the Lawmen to minus 10 yards through one quarter, 67 in the first half, and kept them out of the end zone until the final minutes.
Hillhouse also holds a win over Fairfield Prep, defeating the Jesuits, 36-12.
Shelton took a 28-0 lead after one quarter, and was ahead 42-0 at the half versus Prep, which scored its only points in the third quarter.
Jonathan Groth’s four conversion kicks that stamped each score was the only similarity in how the Gaels got on the scoreboard in the opening period.
Joel Youd, who ran for 45 yards on seven carries, scored on a 10-yard run and Ray Pendegast connected with Paul Piccirrilo for a 50-yard touchdown.
Pendagast was 5-for-6 in the game for 138 yards and two scores.
The Gaels’ defense did the rest, as Cody Kitson recovered a Prep fumble in the end zone and Robert Milne returned another fumble 38 yards to paydirt to make it 28-0.
Pendagast upped his season’s touchdown total to 11 with a 37-yard strike to Mike Georgalas in the second stanza.
Shaquill Holmann, who gained 88 yards on five carries, completed the Shelton scoring with a 68-yard run.
Chris Mancuso ran for 56 yards on eight carries for the Gaels.
Pendagast, who is 80-for-143 passing for 1,293 yards, will look to march Shelton past a Hillhouse defense that has given up 23 points per game.
Shelton is scoring 33 points per outing with Rob Gelozin, Patrick Gillen, Greg Bukoski, Tyler McNamara and James Keleman doing the bulk of the blocking.
Ryan Deangelis (360 yards) and Youd (222 yards) have led the ground game.
Georgalas has 31 catches good for 486 yards and three scores.
Piccirillo’s 19 receptions include five for scores and a 23-yard gain per reception.
Deangelis has caught 11 balls and Dan Guerrera 10.
Kitson, Carl Cristino, Youd, Gillen, Georgalas, Ricky Raffaele, Gelozin and Milne are the Gaels top tacklers and will do their best to stop a Hillhouse offense that is averaging 28 points per game.
Shelton will return to SCC Division I West action when it visits Amity Regional on Nov. 6 at 7 p.m.
