New Canaan High School has been then hot spot for Connecticut football for the past four years.

The run started with the Curtis Casali-led squad, which appeared in two State tournaments and one FCIAC final and won a State championship in 2006 as tailback Dan Neeleman and fullback David Reed ran wild in the final.

Some blasts from the past invaded Dunning Field last Friday night, but it was the present which made the loudest noise on the gridiron.

The current crop of senior football players, who went undefeated last fall, kept their perfect record intact by sweeping three 25-minute games at the annual Has-Beens vs. Will-Bes football night at NCHS.

The seniors, dubbed the “Are Nows,” received their toughest challenge from the alumni team, the “Has-beens,” who featured 2008 graduate Charlie Westfal at quarterback.

The tears in the eyes of the New Canaan Rams were understandable. A remarkable and magical girls’ lacrosse season had just come to an unwelcome end with a 16-8 loss to Darien in the State final at Trumbull, and the seniors on the New Canaan squad were suddenly faced with the fact that their careers as Rams were over.

But seniors such as co-captains Jenny Simpson, Veronica Lizzio and Meg Boland have left New Canaan with quite a legacy.

There was plenty of red and black to go around at last week’s CIAC Class L doubles tournament, as three New Canaan pairs reached the semifinals and two faced off in the championship match.

Senior Sam Rashin and junior Kevin Budrawich struck gold when they finished off teammates Andrew Hornblower and Nick Laub in the final 6-0, 6-1. It was the second straight win over fellow Rams for Rashin and Budrawich, who picked off junior Peter Huff and freshman Patrick Newton 7-6 (5), 6-4, in the semifinals.

The all-New Canaan doubles championship highlighted a great week for the Rams, who scored 27 points to win their first State championship in three years. New Canaan’s last win in 2006 ended a three-peat for the team, which has won 20 State titles under the current format.

If statistics were meant to tell the whole story, then Lauren Ambler’s two-set loss in the State Class M girls’ tennis final last Thursday was merely a bump in the road for the New Canaan Rams.

The Rams knocked off not one, but two title contenders and captured their sixth consecutive State championship with a 5-2 win over the Wilton Warriors at Yale’s tennis courts.

Ambler’s match was just one of the two points that counted against the Rams, but as Head Coach Gail Overbeck pointed out, having her senior co-captain play through back pain in a championship setting was a symbolic lift for the team, and was as big a part of the title as any victory.

It’s no stretch to say that when New Canaan High senior Curtis Loop steps on to any golf course in any tournament, he’s an immediate threat to anyone who hopes to contend for a victory.

After a four-year career with the Rams, Loop may have saved his best for last at Monday’s Division II State championships.

Playing at Tallwood Golf Course in Hebron, Loop racked up 17 pars and one birdie to shot a 1-under 71, leading the Rams to a two-stroke victory and their sixth State championship in the past eight years.
