When hikers head into the Eklund Native Species Garden along the Shelton trails, they will discover that its butterfly garden bed does not actually contain butterflies but rather native plants and flowers that butterflies live on.
The Shelton Conservation Commission expanded the garden, off Oak Village Road near Hope Lake, to help local species like the Karner blue butterfly, which depends on native blue lupine to survive.
Wild blue lupine is one of dozens of native species that have been planted in the area over the past two years.
“This is the first big year for the garden,” Conservation Commission Agent Teresa Gallagher said.
The Shelton Post 16 American Legion baseball team ran into a trio of aces this weekend in its series against Milford Post 196.
Coach Fred Kelley’s squad was swept in a three-game set by Milford (10-3), as the 196ers pitching staff limited Shelton to seven hits total in the series.
Would you like to know how many calories the meals on the menu have when you eat at a chain restaurant, such as McDonald’s and Chili’s and the Olive Garden?
A law passed in June by the state Legislature would have required chain restaurants to do just that on printed menus and menu boards — Senate Bill 1080, An Act Concerning Access to Health and Nutritional Information in Restaurants, also known as the “menu bill.”
We’re speaking about it in the past conditional tense (“would have required”) because Gov. M. Jodi Rell vetoed it on July 2.|
